Scenario Editor Manual (abridged)

GBCE Manual Abridged

Once you have downloaded the 3 scenario parts, you will need to unzip the files into their directory structures. Create a temporary area to unzip the data files into.

Part 2 will take you to a different website. Scroll down until you find the link to the 'Campaign Editor - Download part 2'. Download this file.

Unzip Part2 first (GBCE_part2.zip) with the folder structure as this will place the files where they need to be in their directories. Due to some last minute changes, there are some sound files (.wav) in here that need to be stored in the GBCE\data directory.

Unzip Part 1 (GBCE_part1_sounds.zip) in the data directory as this contains further sound files.

Unzip the Install data (GBCE_install.zip) in the base GBCE level as this is the install program that will install the Scenario Editor from CD.

The directory structure should look like the structure above

\temp\GBCE - holding the installation files

temp\GBCE\GBCE\ - holding the GBCE execuable

temp\GBCE\GBCE\data\ - holding data and wav files

temp\GBCE\GBCE\data\Scenario Editor\ - holding .dib graphic files

\temp\GBCE\system - holding the system files

GBCE Directory Structure - ready for install

From the CD, run the SETUP.EXE program in the base GBCE directory and follow the instructions.

Once installed, run the GBCE.exe from the directory you installed it. You can now play the various scenarios available from this and other websites.

Note that there is a Patch for the Scenario Player - download it here

Great Battles - Scenario Editor Program

The Scenario Player above will allow you to play the scenarios on this and other sites. However in order to create your own, you'll need the Scenario Editor.

I am purposefully keeping this as a separate requested download in order to keep track of who has a copy - just in case someone comes along with a license or publication restriction - as this is the key program.

I also feel that as the Scenario Editor was distibuted free when you bought all 3 other games (in the Collectors Edition) that in order to benefit from the Scenario Editor you should own at least one of the Great Battles (Alexander, Caesar or Hannibal) series. In order to verify that this is the case, please copy the contents of the readme.txt file accompanying the game you own. You will find the file in the same directory as the game's executable file.

GBCE Copy to CD

Having unzipped the files into the directory structure, you need to write them to a CD. The root directory should be GBCE so drop the structure shown in the directory diagram above onto the CD.

Label the CD 'GBCE' and you should have a CD that looks like the diagram below.

Update with the latest Patch

Upon receipt of your valid request, I'll e-mail you the Scenario editor. It can be written to the CD instead of the dummy file or not as it does not perform a CD check to run.

I have spent many months trying to track down who - if anyone - owns the publishing rights or copywrites to the GBCE game. I've e-mailed anyone and everyone I can find connected to the game but at all points I have eventually drawn a blank. If you are aware of who current owns the rights or own the rights and do not wish the editor to be distributed in this way - please contact me at once so the page can be dropped.

This download page is produced here on the basis that I can find nobody who has claimed publishing rights or copywrite so I've made the GBCE Player available to all. This enables you to play any pre-created scenarios available from this and other websites.

The Scenario Editor allows you to create your own scenarios and then distribute the finished game to anyone with the Scenario Player. The Editor is not included in the Scenario Player downloads. In order to receive it, you must prove you already own one of the Great Battles series of games - see below for details.

The Scenario Player and Editor were distributed free with the Collectors Edition of the Great Battles games. They allow you to create your own scenarios and then play them as you would any other game in the Great Battles series.

The Editor is not as advanced as the Great Battles games themselves. This is noticable in the lack of some of the landscape features and various units that are not available; but for all that it is still a very useful tool to further the life and playability of the game as can be seen by the diverse scenarios available on this and other websites.

A very brief history

Why this page is here

N.B. You will have to write the downloaded data to a CD. The game will not run unless it finds a valid CD.

Scenario Editor.exe

The GBCE_install.zip file has one additional entry - a file named 'Scenario Editor.exe'. This is only a placement file and lets you know where to put the real Scenario Editor program in the directory structure.

Any file named 'scenario editor.exe' in the 'data' directory (see below) will work.

The dummy file is used to prevent the installation routine from failing after only copying 50% of the application. The install routine will fail if there is no file present so the renamed text file prevents this happening. See below for instructions on receiving your copy of the actual Scenario Editor program.

You can also download Great-Battles from the Underdogs Site

http//www.the-underdogs.org/game.php?gameid=2445

However - Note the words of warning from Erik Ellis

I recently downloaded GBCE from the-underdogs. The file is pretty messed up.  It does not include the MANUAL and SYSTEM folders, and worst of all, Caesar is not included.  Without the SYSTEM folder, the games are unuseable, as the dll's are needed to play.  INSTALL.EXE is also not in the archive.
