• The AI hardly moves its army.(except the numidian LC). The problem was the Numidian cavalry that are better than roman cavalry. My rout points were lost here. (AV)
  • It is easy to flank the PH with LG and gain points very fast. (AV)

  • Avoid the Roman legions in the center. Move your troops including phalanxes to the left and right wings and attack there. Remove the
Iberian LI from the center if possible and let the Romans walk into the void there. Keep your phalanxes in line all the time - never expose their flanks to the Romans. As the turn limit is 8 you need a quick attack. Expect the phalanxes to rout - and rally them with Hasdrubal or Indibilis only.

  • The Carthaginian lines are far to weak to face a frontal Roman attack.
  • One solution : create a sort of 'guerilla' warfare. From the start move your troops in every possible direction - wherever there is free space on the battlefield. The Romans who are relying on group moves and group attacks can't really cope with a dispersed army. Fool the Romans by sending single skirmisher units deep into Roman territory and watch the
legions going after them in full force causing delays in the Roman attack and disturbing their battle order.
  • Instead of one front line, create four or five smaller pockets. In some area's the Carthagians will end up with a numerical superiority - scored the rout points needed there.

  • Make sure the elephants can move forward and rout the Roman cavalry and attack the legions. Use your PH and HI to defend, use your HC only to fill up accidental gaps in the defensive line.
  • Move Antipater to the center or the right to assist Zeuxis or Antiochus.
  • Use only Antiochus to rally units.
Rectangle
  • the Carthaginian MI's and LI's are not really suited to face the Roman legions. (NW)

  • Phalanxes are there to defend. Don't make the mistakes Philip made. Just defend, defend, defend. (NW)

  • One option is to score a turn limit win. Not too difficult. Take care to move that Iberian HI TQ 8 forward if you can - preferably by group moves. They are the best defense you have against the Romans. (NW)
  • Use your TQ 4 MI against the cavalry only. They do not have the power to stand up 'en masse' against the Roman legions. (NW)
  • The other option: to go for a solid win. That is hard. Maybe very hard.Whatever you do, rout the enemy wings first. Your only advantage is there. On the left there is some high TQ LI that can easily outclass the RC when moved in the proper position. On the right, complement your HC with some low quality MI from the rear. (NW)
  • It seemed to me that, after routing the Roman flanks, the center of the enemy army was more hesitant to advance. Might be a clever twist in the computer AI... ? So rout the flanks first, then go for the win. Use a turn to restore cohesion of the cavalry on both flanks, then close in on those nasty Roman legions. Always finish off as many routing enemy units as you can. There is a 6 turn limit. No need to go for a long term tactic. Play offensive. (NW)

Contributors to the Hints & Tips section are :

These hints and tips are general and will not apply to every scenario. Use them as a guide only - experience is the best knowledge.

  • Try to use Infantry to lure opponents in, then try to flank them with cavelry or elephants if available.
  • When you have elephants try to use them against the enemy's cavelry then use your cavelry to circle around and hit from flanks and rear.
  • When playing against the Romans try to send skirmishers or light infantry out around them thus usually getting a Legion or at least a good portion of one to go after them thereby opening gaps in their line allowing your troops to hit them on the flanks or rear.
  • At every chance go after routed units with cavelry or Infantry if necessary.
  • Attack slowly so that every other move you can recover cohesion with group recover cohesion commands, this is a big help in keeping your army from just disintegrating after just a few moves, even when faced with time limits.
  • When playing the Romans go for the center to break the enemy's line as you have the depth advantage, while refusing your flanks and preventing any free shots at your routing units or open flanks by the enemy.
  • Most importantly try to stay flexible enough to react to your opponents moves and any of your own that don't go as planed. In other words cover your back, your flanks and your options!
  • Try to keep your off-centre and wing commanders back to rally routed units and use the rest for attacks.
    (SC)
  • Just don't worry too much about the center. The Carthaginians are by far superior on both wings. There you need to score your victory. Concentrate your efforts there. (NW)

Alternative Version of Cannae

For this version you'll need to replace the cannaev4.scn file under the Hannibal/data directory (remember to back up the original first). This version gives more power to the Carthaginian forces - what do you think? Let me know and I'll pass on your comments.
