  • Keep your front line absolutely intact during the entire battle. Only move units forwards as soon as there are some obvious victory points to score (before the enemy can rally their units); withdraw your advanced units
back into the line as soon as you have a chance. (NW)
  • Dyrrachium is just an excercise in endurance. Line Ceasar's troops up along
the 'ditch'. This ditch is your main advantage over Pompey. Make sure the attacking enemy units have to cross the ditch just before shock combat. (NW)
  • Take your time - there is no turn limit and it does not matter whether you win by turn 12 or turn 42 - as long as you win. (NW)

When playing Scipio, your tactics will be determined by what Caesar does.

If he retreats as he historically did, you need to be moving quickly to intercept before he gets too many of his troops off the southern map edge. Hit him hard from behind, forcing him up the rise if possible - causing additional cohesion hits and possibly inducing rout. A rout at this late stage cannot easily be stopped before leaving the board. Ignore your own routing troops, they'll take ages to reach your edge of the board. (IM)

And Group Attack, Group Attack and Group Attack, its the only way to catch Caesar before he exits. (IM)

  • As Caesar, do not use the cavalry for any other thing than finishing off enemy units that are likely to attack your flanks. Do not advance with the cavalry.
  • Slowly advance your Roman veterans but always try to keep an unbroken, single front.
  • Do not descend to the same 'elevation' as the Tribal army - take care that they have to move level up to confront you. When you play this battle carefully and thoughtfully in the first rounds, it will become a feast later on.(NW)

These hints and tips are general and will not apply to every scenario. Use them as a guide only - experience is the best knowledge.

  • Try to use Infantry to lure opponents in, then try to flank them with cavelry or elephants if available.
  • When you have elephants try to use them against the enemy's cavelry then use your cavelry to circle around and hit from flanks and rear.
  • When playing against the Romans try to send skirmishers or light infantry out around them thus usually getting a Legion or at least a good portion of one to go after them thereby opening gaps in their line allowing your troops to hit them on the flanks or rear.
  • At every chance go after routed units with cavelry or Infantry if necessary.
  • Attack slowly so that every other move you can recover cohesion with group recover cohesion commands, this is a big help in keeping your army from just disintegrating after just a few moves, even when faced with time limits.
  • When playing the Romans go for the center to break the enemy's line as you have the depth advantage, while refusing your flanks and preventing any free shots at your routing units or open flanks by the enemy.
  • Most importantly try to stay flexible enough to react to your opponents moves and any of your own that don't go as planed. In other words cover your back, your flanks and your options!
  • Try to keep your off-centre and wing commanders back to rally routed units and use the rest for attacks.

  • Caesar has the advantage at his left flank. Still, when you rush your troops forward - 'group move' them to the right to strengthen your defenses. Use the skirmishers to confuse the Tribal army at the left wing - then use your power on this wing to rout as many enemy units as you can. Note there's a
    five turn limit! (NW)
  • Use your ballista to kill routing enemy units. They are most effective at short range so move them up and make best use of them. You can fire them a number of times in the turn, they don't cost anything to fire - just make sure you have the points to do so. (IM)

  • Playing Caesar, it is not too hard to stand your ground with the 3 legions - at least at the normal level of play. (IM)
  • Ensure you expand your flanks slightly to prevent Scipio's cavalry getting behind you.
Join your columns in the middle to prevent the cavalry getting between you. (IM)
  • Spend most of your moves just restoring cohesion of your units. Let Scipio do all the attacking. (IM)
  • Use the first turns to line up Caesar's cohorts in a nice, long, unbroken front. The feeble enemy LI and LC will just crash into your sturdy veteran units and rout. (NW)
  • Try to move Caesar's cohorts into some nice, coherent lines of defense as soon as possible. Caesar might need to rally two or three units. Once your defenses are prepared, the battle is as good as won. (NW)
  • As Caesar, watch your centre as this appears the weakest point. The flanks should hold without too much difficulty. (IM)

Hints & Tips

  • Retreat your weaker LI and SK units behind the cohort's line of defense. Strengthen your wings for the upcoming cavalry attack. Once your defenses are properly organised the barbarian BC and LI units appear to be no match at all for the defensive capacity of your Roman CO units. (NW)
